Day trip to Algeciras

The busy port town across the bay from Gibraltar. Ferry hub, real Spanish market town, and the gateway to everywhere.

Why visit Algeciras

The unglamorous gateway city that rewards those who stop. Excellent traditional market, views back to the Rock, and the ferry hub for Ceuta and Morocco. Best combined with another destination.

The full guide

Algeciras does not sell itself as a tourist destination and does not particularly try to. It is a working port city, the busiest in Spain by cargo volume, and one of the main ferry crossing points between Europe and Africa. That functional reputation means most travellers pass through without stopping, which is their loss because the town has a genuine character that rewards an hour or two of wandering.

The Mercado Municipal on Calle Cayetano del Toro is one of the best traditional markets on the Costa del Sol. It is completely unself-conscious, no tourist-facing presentation, just fishmongers, butchers, and vegetable stalls serving the local population. The surrounding streets around the market are the old commercial core of the city, with a proper Spanish shopping street feel that has not been sanitised for visitors.

The historic centre around the Parque de las Palomas has some decent architecture and the old park is pleasant for a coffee stop. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Palma is worth a look. From the port and the waterfront, the views back across the Bay of Algeciras to Gibraltar are excellent, the Rock appears at its most monumental from here, rising straight from the sea.

Algeciras is also the practical gateway if you are catching a ferry to Ceuta (the Spanish enclave on the Moroccan coast, about 1.5 hours by ferry) or connecting to the wider transport network. The bus and train stations here connect to Seville, Granada, Madrid and Málaga.

From Gibraltar it is a 25-minute drive or about 45 minutes on the bus via La Línea. Worth pairing with another destination rather than making it a stand-alone day trip, but if you are passing through, the market alone is worth the stop.
