About

The lighthouse at Europa Point is one of the defining images of Gibraltar: a white tower at the southernmost tip of the Rock, marking where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. It has been operating continuously since 1841, maintained by Trinity House, the lighthouse authority for England, Wales, and the Channel Islands, which also has jurisdiction over Gibraltar's navigational aids. The tower stands 49 metres above sea level and the light is visible for 24 nautical miles. Every ship transiting the Strait of Gibraltar, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes at around 100,000 vessels annually, takes a bearing from this light. The combination of its position, the volume of traffic it guides, and its unbroken operational history since the Victorian era gives it a significance that is easy to underestimate when you are standing in front of what looks like a fairly compact white tower. The lighthouse is operational rather than a museum, so interior access is restricted. You can walk up to and around the base, and the structure is well maintained and clearly signed. The grounds at Europa Point are open at all times and the lighthouse is a good subject for photography, particularly at dusk when the light begins its rotation. The surrounding area adds to any visit. The Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque is adjacent, its white domes and minaret making for an interesting contrast with the lighthouse. The Shrine of Our Lady of Europa sits nearby, one of Gibraltar's oldest places of worship. There is a cannon memorial at the point and benches facing south across the Strait. Access is free and unrestricted. The number 2 bus from town reaches Europa Point directly, or it is a ten-minute drive from the town centre. The mosque and the shrine together give you a short tour of the point covering three very different buildings with spiritual and historical significance, all within a ten-minute walk of each other. Sunset here is exceptional.
