About this tour

The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the best places in Europe to see large whales. Fin whales, pilot whales, and sperm whales all move through the Strait during the summer months, using the deep water channel between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Dolphin Adventure runs dedicated whale watching trips from Marina Bay between June and September when the animals are most reliably present.

The catamaran heads into the Strait on the same route as the dolphin tours, but the focus is on the deeper water where the larger cetaceans travel. The Strait's tidal exchange drives enormous productivity in the water column, concentrating the squid and fish that sperm and pilot whales hunt. Fin whales, the second largest animal on Earth, pass through in numbers that still surprise experienced marine biologists.

Dolphin sightings are standard on these trips too, the three resident species are present year-round. On a good summer day you might see dolphins surfing the bow wave, pilot whales logging at the surface, and a fin whale's six-metre spout in the distance. It is a different scale of wildlife experience from the standard dolphin watching trip.

Book directly with Dolphin Adventure at +350 200 50650 or info@dolphin.gi. Seasonal, June to September only. Departs from Marina Bay, 9 The Square.
