About this event

Gibraltar National Day falls on the 10th of September each year and is by far the most significant event on the territory's calendar. The date commemorates the 1967 referendum in which Gibraltarians voted overwhelmingly to remain a British territory rather than come under Spanish sovereignty: 12,138 votes for remaining British, 44 for integration with Spain. That result, and the principle of self-determination it represented, is what National Day celebrates every year. The preparation starts well before the morning of the 10th. Every shop in Gibraltar sells red and white clothing, face paint, and accessories in the weeks leading up to the event. By the morning of National Day itself, the territory is a sea of red and white. Residents wear the colours from children to grandparents, and the sense of collective identity is palpable in a way that is difficult to describe to anyone who has not experienced it. The main event is a march through the streets of Gibraltar, converging on Casemates Square for speeches, music, and the ceremonial release of red and white balloons at noon. The balloon release is the visual centrepiece of the day: thousands of red and white balloons rising from the square over the old town, photographed every year from the Rock above and shared across social media. It has become one of the most recognisable images associated with Gibraltar internationally. Political speeches from the Chief Minister and other government figures are a fixture of the morning programme, but the mood is celebratory rather than confrontational. This is a party as much as it is a political statement. Food stalls, live music, and informal gatherings in pubs and restaurants continue through the afternoon and into the evening. National Day is a public holiday in Gibraltar. Most businesses close, though restaurants and bars operate on reduced or full holiday hours depending on their trade. Visitors in Gibraltar on the 10th of September are warmly welcomed to join the celebrations. Wearing red and white is both appreciated and expected.
