Three Kings Parade
The traditional Epiphany parade on 5 January bringing the Three Wise Men through Gibraltar's streets. One of the most beloved events in the local calendar.
About this event
The Three Kings Parade on the evening of the 5th of January is one of the most warmly anticipated events in Gibraltar's annual calendar, particularly for families with young children. Marking the Eve of Epiphany, known in Spanish as Noche de Reyes, the parade brings the three biblical Magi through the streets of Gibraltar on elaborately decorated floats, throwing sweets to the crowds lining the route.
The tradition has deep roots in the territory's Catholic and Hispanic cultural inheritance and mirrors the Three Kings parades held across Spain and Latin America on the same night. In Gibraltar, the event has a particularly strong community feel because of the small scale of the territory. Almost everyone comes out, the streets are packed, and the parade route winds through some of the most historic parts of the old town before culminating in a gathering where the kings make their ceremonial appearance before the waiting children.
The atmosphere is generous and joyful. Children line the streets with bags to collect the sweets thrown from the floats, and the theatrical element of the parade, with its costumes, lights, and music, is well-produced given the scale of what Gibraltar is able to organise. Local organisations, community groups, and businesses typically sponsor individual floats, and there is a friendly competition each year over which float has the most impressive design or the most generous sweet supply.
The 5th of January is the eve of a public holiday in Gibraltar, and the mood is correspondingly festive. Most families attend regardless of religious affiliation; the event has long since become a cultural fixture rather than a purely religious ceremony. Hotels and restaurants in Gibraltar tend to be busy around this date because visitors often combine it with the New Year period.
