Overview

Two adventure days in Gibraltar gives you enough space to do the serious physical stuff on day one and then use day two for the water and the crossing. Day one is about earning the views on the Rock itself. Start with the Mediterranean Steps at first light, the hardest and most rewarding approach to the Upper Rock. The ninety-minute climb ends on the ridge with views across the Strait to Morocco and east along the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Walk north along the ridge through the nature reserve, past the macaques at Apes Den, and push on to O'Hara's Battery at the summit before the heat of midday. The battery sits at 426 metres and was armed with one of the most powerful guns in the British arsenal in World War Two. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment, so descend on foot via the Upper Rock road (about 40 minutes) or take a taxi down (around £10). In the afternoon, the World War II Tunnels provide a completely different physical environment: underground, close, and labyrinthine, a full 50 kilometres of tunnels bored out between 1939 and 1944. If there is energy left, Gorham's Cave on the eastern face of the Rock is worth the taxi ride, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that puts everything else in scale. Day two is the water. Start with the dolphin-watching trip early, when the bay is calm and the light is good. From Marina Bay you head west into the Strait, through water that carries more shipping traffic than any other waterway in the world. After the tour, take the afternoon ferry from Gibraltar's terminal to Tangier. The crossing goes straight through the Strait: forty to sixty minutes depending on the service, with the Rock shrinking behind you and the Moroccan coast coming into focus ahead. A few hours in Tangier, then the evening ferry back. The return crossing at dusk, with the Rock lit by the last of the light, is one of the better sights the western Mediterranean offers.
