Overview

Three days alone in Gibraltar means you can get past the surface of the place. The first day earns the views, the second day gets you across the water to Morocco, and the third day is for the quieter corners that most visitors walk straight past. Day one: do the Rock properly. Mediterranean Steps in the early morning before the heat builds, up through the limestone scrub to the ridge with views over the Strait on both sides. At the top, Apes Den, St Michael's Cave, and the Great Siege Tunnels in whatever order suits. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment, so walk down via the Upper Rock road (about 40 minutes) or take a taxi from the top (around £10). Spend time at the Gibraltar Museum in the early afternoon, and end the day at Trafalgar Cemetery as the light fades. Day two: Morocco. Take the morning ferry from the ferry terminal to Tangier. The crossing is about an hour and a quarter. Tangier's medina has been significantly restored in recent years and rewards a full day: the Kasbah museum at the top of the hill, the Grand Socco and the Petit Socco, the American Legation Museum on Rue du Portugal (the first American diplomatic property outside the United States, now a small but excellent museum), and a long lunch at one of the rooftop restaurants overlooking the port. Afternoon ferry back to Gibraltar. Day three is for the things most people miss. Start with the Moorish Castle, the remains of the medieval fortification that has sat above the town since the 700s. Then the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity on Cathedral Square, one of the most unexpectedly beautiful buildings in Gibraltar. The Great Synagogue on Engineer Lane is the oldest synagogue in Gibraltar and one of the finest in the British world. Gorham's Cave complex on the eastern face of the Rock is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Neanderthals lived up to 30,000 years ago. Finish at Europa Point as the sun drops over the Strait.
