Overview

Three adventure days at the Strait of Gibraltar is a proper trip. You move between countries, cover the Rock from both ground level and the water, spend a morning in Morocco, and close the whole thing on the Atlantic side of Europe at Tarifa with the kitesurf rigs filling the horizon. Day one earns the altitude. The Mediterranean Steps at first light, ninety minutes of steep limestone scrambling to the ridge with views in both directions over the Strait. Walk the ridge north through the macaque territory, push on to O'Hara's Battery at the Rock's summit, and then drop into the Great Siege Tunnels before the midday crowds. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment, so descend on foot via the Upper Rock road (about 40 minutes) or take a taxi down (around £10). Afternoon: the World War II Tunnels, a different and larger scale, and then, if the legs hold, a taxi to Gorham's Cave on the eastern face of the Rock. The cave complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Neanderthals lived until around 30,000 years ago. It is the kind of site that resets your sense of scale after a day of modern military history. Day two: water. Start with the dolphin-watching trip at 9am from Marina Bay, through the Strait where the feeding is most concentrated. After the tour, take the afternoon ferry to Tangier. The crossing goes directly through the narrowest part of the Strait, through some of the busiest shipping water on Earth. A few hours in the Tangier medina, the Kasbah, and then the evening ferry back across. Day three: Tarifa. Drive from the Gibraltar border forty minutes along the Costa de la Luz to the southernmost point of continental Europe. The Atlantic beach at Playa de los Lances runs for ten kilometres with consistent wind and the kitesurf schools are among the best in Europe. The day is yours: surf lesson, watch the riders, walk to the Cape Trafalgar headland twenty kilometres north, or take the short ferry from Tarifa port across to Tangier for a second Morocco morning if you have not had enough. Drive back to Gibraltar by evening.
