About

St Michael's Cave is the kind of place that stops you mid-sentence. You walk into the hillside and suddenly you are standing inside a cavern carved by nature over millions of years, surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites in formations that look deliberately theatrical. It is one of Gibraltar's most visited attractions, and it earns it. The cave is a natural limestone cavern system sitting about 300 metres above sea level inside the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. The main chamber, known as Cathedral Cave, was converted in the 1950s into an auditorium with fixed seating for around 600 people. The acoustics are remarkable and the Gibraltar government still uses it for concerts and performance events. If something is on during your visit, it is worth staying for. The stalactites and stalagmites have been growing here for hundreds of thousands of years. Some of the larger columns took over 100,000 years to form and are highlighted by coloured lighting that could easily feel gimmicky but somehow does not. The scale of the formations carries it. The cave system extends much deeper than the public area, and parts of it are used for scuba diving in the underground pools (a separate guided experience, not included in the standard ticket). The cave features in ancient mythology. The Romans believed it was bottomless and connected to Africa under the Strait of Gibraltar. Neolithic human remains and artefacts have been found here, confirming the cave has been known to humans for a very long time. During the Second World War it was used as a military hospital. The standard self-guided visit takes you through the main lit chambers on a fixed path. The path is paved but there are steps throughout and it can be slippery in wet conditions. Proper shoes are a good idea. Entry is included in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve combined ticket (£19 for adults), which also covers the Great Siege Tunnels, the Apes' Den, the Skywalk, Moorish Castle, and O'Hara's Battery. Allow at least 45 minutes here, longer if you want to sit and take it in properly.

Accessibility

Paved path throughout but steps are present. Slippery when wet. Wheelchair access is limited due to steps and terrain.
