About this tour

If you cannot secure a place on one of the limited cave tours (which require booking months ahead in summer), the Gorham's Cave Viewing Platform on Europa Advance Road offers a legitimate alternative. You see the cave entrance from the cliff above, with staff talks running every 30 minutes from 10:00 explaining the site's significance as the last known home of Neanderthal humans on Earth.

The platform is open Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 14:00, with last entry at 13:30. Admission is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. A joint ticket with the Gibraltar National Museum is available for £16 adult / £8 child, both sites are operated by the Gibraltar Museum and the joint ticket represents good value if you are visiting on a weekday.

The platform itself sits on the Eastern Rock face overlooking Sandy Bay and the sea, with views across to Morocco. Even without the cave tours, the scale of the site, a sheer limestone cliff with caves at sea level that has barely changed since Neanderthals sheltered here 30,000 years ago, is striking enough to justify the short detour from the main tourist circuit.

The Mediterranean Steps trail (free, 07:00 to 22:00 daily) passes nearby if you are walking the Rock's eastern face. Contact the Gibraltar Museum at +350 200 74289 or neanderthals@gibmuseum.gi for advance information.
