About Casemates Square

Casemates Square is where Gibraltar starts. Sitting just minutes from the cruise terminal and the border crossing with Spain, it is the natural first stop for anyone coming through. The square takes its name from the casemates, the old military gun emplacements that once protected this corner of the fortification. Today those thick stone walls house restaurants, cafes, pubs, and souvenir shops. During the day, Casemates is a constant mix of cruise passengers, day-trippers from Spain, and locals going about their business. Street performers occasionally set up in the centre. On weekends the square fills with a market atmosphere. It hosts Gibraltar's biggest public events, including the Christmas light switch-on in December, which draws families from across the territory and from La Linea just across the border. The architecture is a mix of the old casemate walls, partially preserved, alongside more modern buildings painted in warm Mediterranean colours. Looking south from the square you get your first proper glimpse of the Upper Rock looming above the rooftops. Food and drink are the main draw outside of the events calendar. Full English breakfasts, tapas, fresh seafood, and proper Gibraltar calentita if you know where to look. The pubs range from British-style boozers to relaxed terrace bars. Prices are slightly higher than Spain but broadly similar to a modest UK high street. Main Street runs south from Casemates, and that corridor of tax-free shopping is within two minutes on foot. The Gibraltar Museum, the Grand Casemates Gates, and the Southport Gates are all accessible on a short walk. If you have only a few hours in Gibraltar, this square and its immediate surroundings will keep you occupied. If you have longer, it is the obvious launchpad.
