About

Princess Caroline's Battery sits near the northern end of the town fortifications, built in the early 18th century and named after Caroline of Ansbach, wife of King George II. It is one of the surviving sections of Gibraltar's extensive system of town defences, most of which were demolished or absorbed into later developments over the centuries. Today the battery houses the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Museum, making it the natural destination for anyone interested in the history of Gibraltar's own regiment. The Royal Gibraltar Regiment was formally established in 1958 though it traces its lineage through a series of earlier local defence units going back to the early 18th century. The museum covers the regiment's history through uniforms, weapons, equipment, photographs, and documents. The regiment has served on operations in Northern Ireland, the Falklands, and various United Nations and NATO commitments, and the museum gives proper weight to that operational history rather than focusing exclusively on ceremonial aspects. The battery structure itself is well preserved and the cannon on the gun platform are original period pieces. The views north from the battery give a clear sense of why this position on the town defences mattered, covering the land approach from the Spanish side. The narrow isthmus connecting Gibraltar to Spain is visible from here, and the Landport Tunnel, the historic main gate into Gibraltar through the town walls, is close by. Entry to the museum is modest in cost. The combination of the military heritage, the preserved battery architecture, and the views make it worth the visit for anyone doing a historical tour of Gibraltar's town fortifications. Allow about 45 minutes.
