Overview

Gibraltar rewards couples who are willing to get up early. The Rock at 9am, before the day-trippers arrive, has a quietness to it that disappears by noon. Use that window. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment, so the Upper Rock is reached by taxi (around £10 from town, 10 minutes) or on foot via Willis Road (45 minutes). Buy your combined Upper Rock ticket at the entrance gate: £30 adult, covering all seven attractions. The views from the top are immediate and dramatic: the whole bay spread out below you, the Spanish coast curving away to the east, and on a clear morning the Atlas Mountains of Morocco sitting on the southern horizon. Take your time at the top before moving on to the apes. Apes Den is lively and funny and occasionally startling when a macaque lands on someone's shoulder without warning. It is not a conventional romantic stop, but shared chaotic moments tend to make good memories. After the apes, the walk south to St Michael's Cave passes through quiet rock-scrub landscape with the sea visible on both sides of the peninsula. The cave itself has a hushed, cathedral quality that earns the comparison. Back in town by early afternoon, walk Main Street slowly. Gibraltar's duty-free status means the jewellers and perfume shops are worth a browse, and the architecture along the upper end of Main Street reflects the layers of Moorish, Spanish, and British history that have shaped the place. Lunch at one of the harbour-side restaurants near Marina Bay rather than Casemates: quieter, better views, and the food is generally better. In the afternoon, take a taxi to Europa Point. The southernmost point of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean and Atlantic meet, has a particular stillness to it in the afternoon. The Ibrahim Al-Ibrahim Mosque is architecturally beautiful and open to respectful non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times. Watch the ships come through the Strait as the light changes. For sundowners, Casemates Square has outdoor bars that face west and catch the last of the evening light.
