Overview

Two days gives you enough room to do Gibraltar properly and add the single best day trip available from the Rock: the ferry to Tangier. A morning in Morocco changes the whole character of the trip. Day one is Gibraltar at its most atmospheric. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment, so take a taxi to the top (around £10 from town, 10 minutes) or walk via Willis Road (45 minutes). Start early to beat the crowds, and buy your combined Upper Rock ticket at the entrance gate: £30 adult, covering all seven attractions. Morning light on the Strait is best from the top. Spend the morning on the Upper Rock between the macaques and St Michael's Cave, then come back down for a slow afternoon. The Mediterranean Steps are worth considering as an alternative descent if the weather is good and you are both comfortable with a steep rocky path: the views from the ridge back down toward Europa Point are exceptional, and the lower section passes through quiet nature reserve with nobody else around. In the afternoon, the World War II Tunnels are a different experience from the Great Siege Tunnels. They are larger, more labyrinthine, and give a clearer picture of what it meant to be garrisoned inside a Rock that had been converted into an entire underground city. After the tunnels, walk the seafront promenade at Rosia Bay as the light drops, then dinner near Marina Bay. Day two begins at the ferry terminal. The ferry to Tangier from Gibraltar operates most days in the season and the crossing takes around an hour. Tangier is a functioning port city with a medina that has been restored over the last decade into something worth the trip on its own. The Kasbah, the Petit Socco, and the old Rue de la Marine along the harbour front are all walkable in a morning. Lunch in the medina, then the afternoon ferry back. Gibraltar in the late afternoon light from the sea, approaching the Rock from the south, is one of the better arrivals in travel. Sundowners at Casemates to close.
