Overview

Eight hours in Gibraltar is a proper day out. You are not rushing back before lunch, which means you can actually pace yourself, sit with a coffee before joining the crowds on the Upper Rock, and still fit in a dolphin-watching trip in the afternoon. Start at Casemates Square. Grab a coffee at one of the cafes on the square itself and take fifteen minutes to get your bearings. The square has been the social centre of Gibraltar for centuries, and it still is. Then set off up Main Street toward the Upper Rock. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment, so the Upper Rock is reached on foot or by taxi. A taxi from Casemates to the top takes about 10 minutes and costs around £10. Alternatively, walk up via Willis Road, which takes about 45 minutes. At the entrance gate, buy your Upper Rock ticket: £30 adult, covering all seven attractions inside the reserve. At the top, the full Upper Rock Nature Reserve awaits: the Barbary macaques at Apes Den, St Michael's Cave with its cathedral-scale limestone chambers, and the O'Hara's Battery viewpoint if you have the energy to push a bit further north along the ridge. The battery was active in both World Wars and the views from up there extend all the way to the Costa del Sol on a clear day. Coming back down, walk via Great Siege Road. It winds down through the nature reserve, passing information boards and old fortifications, and brings you out near the town centre after about forty minutes of steady downhill. Lunch on Main Street, then head to Marina Bay for the afternoon dolphin trip. Gibraltar is one of the best places in Europe to see common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. The bay is a feeding ground and the tours run in open-water boats through the Strait. Most 90-minute tours depart from Marina Bay at around 2pm. Spots fill up, so book ahead if possible. Back at Marina Bay by late afternoon, you have a cold drink and a final wander through Casemates before the gangway calls.
