Overview

Families visiting Gibraltar for a single day have a surprisingly easy job: everything that makes Gibraltar great for adults is also brilliant for children. Wild monkeys, a cave that looks like a film set, and one of the most dramatic rocks in the world. You do not have to convince anyone to enjoy this. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment. The Upper Rock is reached by taxi (around £10 from the town centre, 10 minutes) or on foot via Willis Road (about 45 minutes). Start early to beat the heat and the tour groups. At the entrance gate, buy your combined Upper Rock ticket: £30 adult, £22 child, covering all seven attractions inside the reserve. At the top, young children may need a moment to adjust to the height, but once they spot the monkeys all hesitation disappears. Apes Den is the highlight for most families. The Barbary macaques are completely habituated to humans and will approach you directly. Keep snacks packed away, do not let small children hold out their hands with food in them, and make sure bags are zipped. Beyond that, enjoy the chaos. The macaques interact with each other constantly and watching their social dynamics is as entertaining as any wildlife park. After the apes, walk south along the Upper Rock path to St Michael's Cave. The cave is lit and paved and entirely accessible, and the stalactites are exactly the kind of dramatic natural feature that stays in a child's memory for years. There is also a small sound-and-light show in the main chamber. Coming back down, take a taxi from the top (around £10) for younger children, or walk down via the Upper Rock road (about 40 minutes) for teenagers. Back at Casemates, lunch is easy and affordable. In the afternoon, head to Alameda Botanical Gardens for a quieter hour. The gardens have free entry, plenty of space to run around, and a small children's play area near the lower entrance. End the day at Europa Point, a short drive or taxi south, for the lighthouse and the view across to Morocco.
