Overview

Three days for a history-focused visitor is enough to go deep into Gibraltar's layered past and then extend the narrative across the water. The Strait of Gibraltar has been a crossing point, a battleground, and a trade route for at least five thousand years. Tangier and Tarifa are part of the same history. Day one: Gibraltar's civilian and religious history. The Gibraltar Museum first for context, then the Moorish Castle, the Great Synagogue, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and the Convent in the afternoon. The Garrison Library closes the day: founded in 1793 by officers of the garrison, it remains one of the oldest lending libraries in the British world and the reading room is a beautiful, quiet space worth the visit. Day two: the military geology of the Rock. This means the Great Siege Tunnels and the World War II Tunnels, both in the same day, in the order they were built. The Great Siege Tunnels in the morning: the 1779-1783 hand-carved network that represents one of the most remarkable feats of engineering under siege conditions in military history. The World War II Tunnels in the afternoon: a completely different scale, a different century, a different kind of warfare. O'Hara's Battery at the highest point of the Rock can follow the morning tunnels. Gorham's Cave on the eastern face, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Neanderthals lived until around 30,000 years ago, rounds out the day before dinner. Day three: the broader history of the Strait. Morning ferry to Tarifa (Spain), which was the landing point of the Moorish invasion of Iberia in 711 AD under Tariq ibn Ziyad. The old Castillo de Guzman in Tarifa dates from the ninth century. From Tarifa, a short ferry crosses to Tangier in Morocco. The Kasbah Museum in Tangier's old palace complex tells the history of northern Morocco and its relationship with southern Europe across the same centuries that Gibraltar's museums cover from the other side of the water. NOTE: The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment (no reopening date). Stops mentioning the cable car in this itinerary should be reached on foot, by taxi, or skipped. We update this guide as soon as the cable car reopens.
