Overview

Solo travel and Gibraltar suit each other well. The place is compact enough to walk most of it, safe enough to wander without a plan, and interesting enough that two days go by fast. Day one: go deep on the Rock. The Mediterranean Steps in the morning give you the physical version of Gibraltar, the one that requires effort and rewards you with solitude on the ridge with views in both directions. Take a taxi to Jews Gate early, before the heat builds, and give yourself a steady ninety minutes to reach the top. At the summit, the Upper Rock path leads north through the macaque territory at Apes Den and on to the Great Siege Tunnels. The tunnels are better alone. Groups tend to cluster at the information boards and move in fits and starts. On your own you can walk the network at whatever pace suits, linger at the positions where the original cannon embrasures were blasted through the rock face, and think about what three years inside this mountain actually looked like for the garrison. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment, so walk down via the Upper Rock road (about 40 minutes) or take a taxi (around £10). Late lunch in town. In the afternoon, the Gibraltar Museum on Bomb House Lane covers everything from the Neanderthal skull fragment found at Forbes' Quarry to the detailed military history of the Great Siege. The Moorish Baths in the basement are original fourteenth-century stonework. Trafalgar Cemetery at dusk is one of the more affecting quiet corners of Gibraltar. Day two: the morning ferry to Tangier. A solo day in Tangier is one of the better ways to spend twenty-four hours in the western Mediterranean. The medina is navigable alone, the Kasbah gives views over the Strait, and the afternoon ferry back brings you across the water with Morocco behind you and the Rock ahead. That return crossing, as Gibraltar grows larger on the horizon, is one of those travel moments that stays with you.
