Main Street
Gibraltar's famous high street. Tax-free shopping, historic buildings, and everything from Marks and Spencer to local jewellers. Open most days 9am to 7pm.
About Main Street
Main Street is Gibraltar's primary commercial artery, running roughly north to south through the centre of the territory for about a kilometre and a half. It begins just south of Casemates Square, where the Grand Casemates Gates mark the traditional northern entrance, and winds its way down past a remarkable concentration of shops, restaurants, banks, and historic buildings before eventually reaching the southern end near the Alameda Botanical Gardens.
What makes Main Street unusual by any European standard is the tax-free status of Gibraltar. As a British Overseas Territory that sits outside the European Union's VAT area, Gibraltar does not charge VAT on most goods. The practical effect is that prices on everything from electronics and perfume to alcohol, tobacco, and jewellery are noticeably lower than in Spain or the United Kingdom. This has made Main Street a shopping destination in its own right, drawing day-trippers from across the border for decades. You will find branches of Marks and Spencer, Mothercare, and other British chains sitting alongside local jewellers, electronics outlets, and souvenir shops selling everything from Gibraltar stamps to apes merchandise.
Beyond the shopping, Main Street rewards a slower pace. The architecture is eclectic in the best possible way, with Georgian townhouses, Moorish-influenced doorways, colonial-era administrative buildings, and Catholic churches all competing for attention. The Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, the Gibraltar Museum, and the Governor's Residence all sit on or just off Main Street, and they are all worth a look even if you are primarily here to shop.
Pedestrianised for most of its length, the street is generally comfortable to walk even when busy. The narrower sections can get crowded when a large cruise ship is in port, but outside of those peak hours it is an easy and enjoyable stroll. Most shops open around nine in the morning and close around seven in the evening, six or seven days a week, though hours can vary.
