Overview

Three days for two people in Gibraltar is a good amount of time. You can take it slowly, revisit places that struck you, and still fit in both a day trip to Morocco and a side trip to Tarifa on the Spanish coast. Day one is the Upper Rock done properly. The Gibraltar Cable Car is currently closed for refurbishment, so take a taxi to the top (around £10 from town, 10 minutes) or walk via Willis Road (45 minutes). Buy your combined Upper Rock ticket at the entrance gate: £30 adult, covering all seven attractions. Spend the morning with the macaques at Apes Den, explore St Michael's Cave, and then the Great Siege Tunnels in the early afternoon before the tour buses pack them. Come back down in time for a late lunch. In the afternoon, take the walk along the southern seafront toward Europa Point. The Ibrahim Al-Ibrahim Mosque is one of the most architecturally distinctive buildings in Gibraltar, and the setting on the headland overlooking the Strait is extraordinary. Watch the sun go down from Europa Point, then take a taxi back to town for dinner. Day two is Morocco. Take the morning ferry from Gibraltar's ferry terminal to Tangier. The crossing takes about an hour and a quarter on most services. Tangier has been completely transformed in the last decade: the medina has been cleaned up, the Kasbah restored, and the seafront rebuilt. Spend the morning in the medina, climb to the Kasbah, eat a long lunch at one of the rooftop restaurants, and take the afternoon ferry back. The approach to Gibraltar from the south as the afternoon light hits the Rock is worth seeing. Day three: Tarifa. The forty-minute drive from the Gibraltar border to Tarifa takes you along the Algeciras coast and then the Costa de la Luz, one of the wilder stretches of the southern Spanish coastline. Tarifa is the southernmost point of continental Europe and the kite-surfing capital of Europe. The medina is compact and authentic, the beaches are enormous, and the Cape Trafalgar viewpoint is just twenty minutes north by car.
