Jewish Heritage Walking Tour Gibraltar
Gibraltar has one of the oldest Jewish communities in the British Overseas Territories, walk the historic synagogues, cemeteries, and lanes of the old quarter.
About this tour

Gibraltar's Jewish community has been continuously present on the Rock for over 300 years, arriving after the British captured it in 1704. At its peak, Jews made up a significant proportion of the civilian population, and their presence shaped the architecture, commerce, and culture of Gibraltar in ways that are still visible today.

The Jewish heritage circuit covers several sites within easy walking distance of Main Street. The Line Wall Synagogue on Line Wall Road is the most visible, a working synagogue in the Moorish-influenced style of the 18th century. The Flemish Cemetery on the Upper Rock contains graves dating from the 1700s alongside military plots from various periods. Irish Town, despite its name, has strong historical associations with the Jewish merchant community who operated businesses along what was one of the colony's main commercial streets.

Karel's Gibraltar City Walking Tour (bookable via buytickets.gi at £20) includes the Line Wall Synagogue and key Jewish heritage sites as part of its route. For those who want a focused self-guided circuit, the Gibraltar Heritage Trust publishes walking route guides available from their office and the main tourist information point. Respectful dress is required when entering active synagogues.

The Gibraltar Jewish Community (jewishgibraltar.com) also occasionally organises community heritage events open to visitors. The community remains active and welcoming to people with a genuine interest in the history.
