Military History Walking Tour Gibraltar
Gibraltar's military heritage is everywhere, from 300-year-old cannon emplacements to WWII tunnels. Walk it with a guide who actually knows what you are looking at.
About this tour

Few places on Earth have been fought over as persistently as Gibraltar. The Rock has been under siege 14 times, has changed hands between Moorish, Spanish, and British forces, and has been continuously fortified since the 13th century. Walking through Gibraltar without that context is a bit like walking through a battlefield without knowing what the battle was.

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust's weekly Tuesday walking tour (from The Main Guard, John Mackintosh Square, 10:30 AM, £20 adult) focuses heavily on the defence infrastructure: the walls, the bastions, the counterguards, and the curtain walls that ring the city. The Karel city tour (Grand Casemates Square, up to 2 hours, £20) extends that further into the Moorish period and the early colonial era.

For those who want to extend the military history focus up to the Upper Rock, the Great Siege Tunnels, WWII Tunnels, and O'Hara's Battery are accessible with a Nature Reserve ticket (£13 adult). The 100-Ton Gun at Napier of Magdala Battery is an 1870s naval cannon, still in place, that fired projectiles weighing literally 100 tons. Most Rock tours include it in their extended circuits.

The Gibraltar National Museum (18-20 Bomb House Lane, £15 adult) provides the best fixed reference point for military history, with exhibits covering every major siege and the full arc of British rule. Allow two hours minimum.
