About this tour

NOTE: This tour referenced the Gibraltar Cable Car which is currently closed for refurbishment. Verify the operator's current routing before booking.
Most people see the Upper Rock from a minibus window. This walking tour is different. Starting near the Eliott Hotel at 1 Library Ramp, a licensed guide takes you up through the Upper Rock Nature Reserve on foot, reaching spots that the tourist buses cannot access.

The route passes Devil's Gap Battery, the Apes' Den (home to Gibraltar's famous Barbary macaques, Europe's only wild monkey population), the St Michael's Cave viewing area, and the Cable Car Top Station. Along the way you are walking paths that British soldiers, Moorish builders, and Neanderthal-era humans all used before you. The guide provides context that turns what looks like rock and scrubland into a deeply layered piece of history.

This is a private tour, meaning it is just your group and the guide. The base price covers two people at £70. Additional participants are charged at a flat rate per person at the Nature Reserve entrance office (£30 adult, £25 optional interior attractions). It is not cheap, but the access and one-to-one attention make it worthwhile for those who want to actually understand what they are looking at.

Appropriate footwear is essential. The Upper Rock path is steep and uneven in places. Departure from 1 Library Ramp, near the Eliott Hotel.
